INTRODUCTION
On July 1st, 2020 the Michigan legislature amended 1998 PA 58 to allow local government units to establish within their boundaries a Social District and within a Social District a common area where patrons of properly permitted, licensed alcohol providers may be outside with a single open container. To promote the continued growth and vitality of Downtown Durand, while promoting well being and community interaction, the City of Durand, the Downtown Development Authority, and the Chamber of Commerce worked together on passing the creation of a Social District as defined by 1998 PA 58 - Sec. 551.

RULES AND GUIDELINES
Within the Social District boundary patrons/customers of participating establishments may carry an open alcoholic beverage up to 16oz in a designated container with appropriate sticker. The rules and guidelines for the district are as follows:
- Those 21 years or older can purchase an alcoholic beverage in a designated cup with sticker from a participating establishment and carry and consume the alcoholic beverage within the social district.
- Drink from designated containers only with social district sticker
- Only alcohol purchased from a participating Social District permit holder may be consumed in the Social District. No outside alcohol allowed.
- Alcoholic beverages purchased at one establishment cannot be taken into any other establishment. The beverage must remain outdoors within the Social District area
- Stay within the boundaries of the Social District. Signs are installed downtown delineating boundary
- Designated cups are not reusable
- Please take care of cups, dispose appropriately, and help keep downtown free and clear of trash and debris
- Drink responsibly and have fun
NOTE: All State of Michigan and city of Durand laws apply. Including but not limited to those prohibiting public intoxication, impaired driving, open containers, and serving alcohol to minors.

What are the boundaries of the Durand Social District? A map is posted above depicting the boundary of the Social District. Signs are also located downtown delineating entry and exiting points.
What Business can serve alcohol within the Social District? Each business capable of serving alcohol is responsible for checking with the State Liquor Commission as to whether their liquor license allows them participation in the sale of alcohol for the Social District and if so, then an application to the State Liquor Commission would be made by them for approval. The establishments in the Social District that could POTENTIALLY participate are Nick's Hometown Grill, The Ironhorse Pub, D-railed, The Moose Lodge, Our 206 Bar, and Union Station Smokehouse
What are the operating hours of the Social District? Monday-Saturday from 3pm to 11pm
Can I walk anywhere with my drink? No. Patrons must stay within the Social District Boundary. Leaving the Social District or entering another establishment with an alcoholic beverage is a violation of State and local laws
Can I take my drink into another business? Patrons can enjoy their beverages in public spaces within the Social District boundary. Patrons may NOT take alcoholic beverages into other establishments
Can I bring my own alcohol? No
What if I get a designated cup with sticker and pour my own alcohol into it and stay within the Social District? Alcoholic beverages must be purchased at a participating location within the Social District and be in a designated cup with sticker. No outside alcohol will be permitted, doing as such is a violation of State and local laws
